“Ketheron’s Bucket-Mending & Hymen Emporium” @ The Castro Theater November 5!

Fallen women, far and wide…come here to get your hymen tied! Is the first line in the short film, “Ketheron’s Bucket-Mending and Hymen Emporium,” which premieres as part of Scary Cow’s 2011 Short Film Festival this Saturday, November 5, 2011 at The Castro Theater. Hymens cannot be tied at the event, though.

“Ketheron’s Bucket-Mending & Hymen Emporium” began as a 14-minute sketch comedy musical written by Nicole Hammersla & directed by Gabrielle Patacsil for PianoFight’s Monday Night Foreplays’ Spring 2011 show.  It was inspired by  this article on The Hairpin by Lili Loofbourow.  The piece included music by Rachel Ferensowicz and featured PF actors Sarah Wright-Schrieberg, Jessica Mele, Emma Shelton, Nicole Hammersla, Rachel Rockwood, and Meredith Terry.  Scary Cow director Anton H. Gill expressed interest in creating a film version of the sketch musical, so Hammersla converted the sketch into a screenplay, and Gill cast all of the piece’s original actors in the film.  Other PF’ers make cameos, including Rob Ready as THE PRIEST and Alex Boyd as HARRY, the prolific cheese-monger!  Visit the film’s official website for more info & shoot photos here: www.antonhgill.com/ketherons

Scary Cow is a community-based and community-financed movie production collective based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Founded in 2007, the film co-op connects filmmaker members with one another as well as resources in order to produce up to 50 short films every year.  Films are screened three times a year at Bay Area theaters such as the Victoria, the Roxie and the Castro.  Monthly membership in Scary Cow costs $50.  This fee from over 200 members covers minor expenses while most of the annual budget funds Scary Cow film festivals and prize winners. Since its inception in 2007, Scary Cow has awarded over $160,000 in prize money and produced over 200 shorts, two features, and many more in production.

The festival on November 5 will be broken into two phases.  Phase 1 screens films under 10 minutes and runs from 3 p.m. to approx 5:30 p.m. followed by an hour-long intermission. Phase 2 runs from 6:30 to approx 10 p.m for films under 20 minutes, including “Ketheron’s.”  If you’d like to attend, you can definitely come to Phase 2 only, though your ticket entitles you to attend all films.  You can buy tickets
