PianoFight’s first official sponsor: The Concern

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – January 27, 2010 – SF-based production company PianoFight is proud of and slightly baffled by an unexpected sponsorship from mysterious corporation The Concern, for PianoFight’s upcoming world premiere of William Bivins’ The Position, February 4 – 28, Thursdays – Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 7:00pm, at the Off-Market Theaters, 965 Mission Street in San Francisco. The Concern Culture & Arts Fund (CCAF) has published a website in honor of the event, www.applyfortheposition.com, at which one can fill out an application for The Position and receive a discount code for $5 off tickets as well as a chance to win free tickets to this CCAF sponsored event. The Concern has also created a short advertisement for The Position which is also posted at www.applyfortheposition.com

While PianoFight does not typically seek out sponsorships, it had also never been offered such a lucrative deal from any entity, public or private, until it received an email from The Concern’s Human Resources Team Member Mrs. Radcliffe. In the email, Radcliffe made clear that The Concern was ready and willing to sponsor Bivins’ play The Position, in the form of creating artwork (posters, flyers, logos etc), a website, as well as short video advertisements. Although PianoFight could not find a company website or any other information about The Concern (besides what Radcliffe had mentioned in her email), as a small, for-profit production company, PianoFight felt this was an offer it couldn’t refuse and partnered with its first official sponsor, The Concern.

So exactly what is The Position? It’s not just a job; in a world ravaged by 80% unemployment and mass social chaos, The Position represents security and fulfillment. The Concern has selected six finalists from more than half-a-million job applicants, flown them to a remote compound, and provided them with every luxury and diversion—including golf, paragliding and skeet shooting. When they arrive, the six candidates are stripped of their clothing and identities, informed that the laws of The Nation have been suspended and that they will be recorded around the clock while they compete for the one job that they believe can give them hope in a hopeless world.

Featuring Kate Jones, Asher Lyons, Gabrielle Patacsil, Eric Reid, Dan Williams and Laura Zimmerman as the six finalists, The Position cast is rounded out by Jessica Cortese and Evan Winchester as employees of The Concern who administer the application process. Anne Jones handles design, Logan Andrews runs the technical side, while Gabi Patacsil, Dan Williams and Rob Ready produce.

With The Position, William Bivins has five world premieres (four of them full-length plays) in the current season. “Pulp Scripture” and “The Afterlife of the Mind” premiered in the Fall, “The Apotheosis of Pig Husbandry” opens at the SF Playhouse in May, and his one-act play “Altered Landscape” will be featured in the Bay One Acts Festival in February.

Christy Crowley has had the pleasure of working with William Bivins before, having directed his competition winning “Grunion Run” and, later in the season, “Pulp Scripture”. She’s worked with PianoFight as an actor and director for the past two years.
